ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, Maine — A New Jersey man suffered fatal injuries when he lost his footing and fell 60 to 70 feet from a cliff, rangers said.

Richard J. Holzschuh, 39, of Toms River, N.J., was walking with a friend on a path near Sand Beach when he left the trail and stood on an outcropping to get a better view of the scenery late Sunday morning, said Richard Rechholtz, a park ranger.

After losing his balance, Holzschuh tried to grab some shrubbery before tumbling onto a rocky beach below, Rechholtz said.

Rangers had to rappel down to reach Holzschuh and render medical assistance, Rechholtz said. From there, the victim was transferred to a 25-foot Coast Guard boat and taken to an ambulance at the town pier in Bar Harbor, he said.

Holzschuh, who suffered a head injury and broken bones, died after arriving at the Mount Desert Island hospital, the ranger said.
