PORTLAND, Maine — Schools grappling with higher food costs are raising prices, reducing choices and limiting costly items like fresh fruit.

Portland school boosted the cost of its lunches 25 to 50 cents in February. But school officials say the additional 22,000 dollars in revenue from the price hike won´t even cover the increase in milk costs alone.

Maine´s Education Department sets caps for school lunches at 2 dollars for elementary schools, and 2 dollars and 25 cents for middle and high schools. Department officials say they will reevaluate those caps over the summer.
