AUGUSTA, Maine — The federal government is issuing a disaster declaration in northern Maine, where the flooded St. John River reached the highest level ever recorded in Fort Kent.

The declaration makes federal resources available to individuals, businesses and communities. Teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency have been in the state making damage assessments.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said the government made the declaration Friday.

In his letter to President Bush seeking a disaster declaration, Gov. John Baldacci estimated that more than 200 homes were damaged and that as many as 1,000 people were displaced from their homes. The latest aerial estimate last weekend indicated more than 400 structures likely sustained damage.
