Martin Luther King Jr. was honored in speeches and other events around the state.
The largest gathering took place in Portland, where Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, was the keynote speaker at the NAACP's annual Martin Luther King breakfast.
Following the breakfast, people marched to Monument Square to lay a wreath in King's memory.
In Orono, more than 300 people showed up at the annual "Keeping the Dream Alive" Martin Luther King Junior breakfast, held at the University of Maine.
Keynote speaker Forrest Pritchett of Seton Hall University spoke on "Building the Dream." Gov. John Baldacci and U.S. Sen. Susan Collins also spoke at the event.
