SCARBOROUGH Health officials said a 5-year-old Scarborough girl has contracted bacterial meningitis and that her family and seven others are being treated with antibiotics as a precaution.
State health officials said the child is a student at Eight Corners Primary School in Scarborough and that she's doing well.
Dr. Dora Mills of the Maine Center for Disease Control said six to 12 Mainers get this form of meningitis every winter. She said there's no reason for people to be overly concerned, but the condition can be dangerous if untreated.
A Bangor woman who was a student at the University of New Hampshire died from the condition earlier this month.
Mills said people should call a doctor if they have symptoms such as high fever, stiff neck, headache, rash or nausea and vomiting.
