A new survey out Monday said that Maine residents made more than 271,000 trips to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos in Connecticut in the past 12 months.

That's according to the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Center for Policy Analysis, which conducted a seven-part survey to determine New England residents' attitudes toward casinos and slot machine parlors.

According to the survey, 61 percent of Mainers who traveled to the Connecticut casinos were men, while 39 percent were women.

Thirty-three percent of the Maine casino-goers had college degrees. Sixty percent had annual incomes of $45,000 or more, while 21 percent made less than $25,000.

The center surveyed 448 Maine residents last fall to compile its results.

The center said it neither supports nor opposes gambling and is studying the issue because of gambling's public policy implications in New England.
