HALLOWELL — Traffic restrictions will continue next week on the south end of U.S. Route 201, otherwise known as Water Street.
Debbie Coffin, Maine Department of Transportation construction manager, said workers will be completing the Kennebec River Rail Trail between Augusta and Gardiner.
“We’ve begun working on the drainage system in the area where we’ll be building a retaining wall later in the project,” Coffin said. “But we have to get the drainage installed first, and in order to do that, we need to restrict traffic to a single lane.”
She said workers would be in the area opposite the historic and scenic turnout on Route 201 just north of Greenville Street and a short distance south of downtown Hallowell.
Drivers can expect alternating one-way traffic between 9 a.m., and 3 p.m. “We’re still working out the schedule for next week, but will be issuing a public notice as soon as the details are worked out,” she added.
Portions of the trail from Augusta to Hallowell and from Farmingdale to Gardiner already have been completed.
The current project will build the middle section of the trail from the vicinity of Temple Street in Hallowell to the northern end of the already-completed section in Farmingdale.
The contract for the project, awarded to Wyman and Simpson of Richmond on a bid of nearly $2.5 million, calls for completion of the work by the end of August.
