No plea in Reynolds murder case

AUGUSTA — An arraignment for a man accused of killing his wife in January at her brother’s Fairfield home was delayed Friday because the judge had not yet received a court-ordered competency evaluation.

Justice Nancy Mills ordered Richard C. Reynolds, 40, of Waterville continued held without bail.

“As soon as that report is received, I expect we will have contact to determine the next step,” Mills told Assistant Attorney General Andrew Benson and Reynolds’ attorney, Peter Barnett.

Reynolds was indicted Feb. 9 on a murder charge in the shooting death of Rhonda Wakefield-Reynolds, 37. He has yet to enter a plea.

“I don’t want him involved in any court proceeding until it’s determined he’s competent,” Barnett said Friday shortly after the brief hearing.

Police say Reynolds shot his wife of seven years in front of their two sons — Jacob, 6, and Matthew 4 — on Jan. 12. Reynolds turned himself into police shortly after the shooting.

Wakefield-Reynolds died the next day.
