BELGRADE — Two people broke through the ice at the south end of Long Pond late Wednesday.

At 8:59 p.m., Kennebec County Sheriff’s deputies and emergency responders from Winthrop, Mount Vernon, Vienna and other communities responded to a report of two people in the water at Long Pond near Dunn Road.

Both were able to make their way to the shore on their own and dive teams were canceled.

A LifeFlight medical helicopter was called in to transport one of the individuals to a hospital shortly after 9:30 p.m., with at least one of the individuals being treated for hypothermia.

Two snowmobiles were reportedly in the water.
