Campaign kicks off for breast cancer license plate

By Central Maine Newspapers March 22, 2007 01:10 PM

AUGUSTA — Breast cancer survivors and supporters today launched an effort to gather 2,000 signatures in support of a new breast cancer license plate.

Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess, R-Cumberland, is sponsoring a bill to create the Maine Breast Cancer Specialty License Plate. State law requires her to gather 2,000 signatures and an equal number of $20 checks to qualify for legislative consideration.

Although most groups take a year or more to gather signatures, Strang Burgess wants to meet the goal by May 1 so the bill can be passed this legislative session.

Any money generated by the sale of the plate would go to the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition, the Maine Cancer Foundation, and the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program.
Forms to sign up for a license plate can be found at http://www.mainecancer.org.
