Tower locations debated

By Kennebec Journal Staff Report March 29, 2007 11:45 AM

WASHINGTON — An amendment that would limit location of cell phone towers tops tomorrow's election here.

The cell phone tower rule would require that anyone living within 1,000 feet of a site would need to sign a waiver before a tower could be built. If passed, the amendment would become part of the town’s Wireless Telecommunication Facility Ordinance.

The amendment has been championed by Chris Deahl of Nelson Ridge, who objected to a tower that would have stood in the view from his home, some 300 feet from the proposed site.

The Nelson Ridge tower proposal has been rejected by the planning board.

The cell phone tower amendment would also define dwelling units, from single-family to multi-family. The actual language of the amendment says a waiver must be obtained, signed and notarized, from every owner of a dwelling unit within the 1,000-foot limit.

The polls will be open Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the town office. Town meeting takes place at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Prescott School gym.
