Roads were blocked, schools and court houses were shut for the day — even some snowplows ended up in the ditch on Thursday as heavy wet snow blanketed the region — up to two feet in places.
By midday, Central Maine Power Co. had reported 95,000 homes and businesses in its service area darkened due to power outages.
Records were set in Portland where the National Weather Service keeps annual climate data and it only got worse the further north you went.
“This is the fifth largest April storm on record,” said meterologist Tom Hawley at the weather service forecast office in Gray. “It’s the ninth snowiest April on record and we still have most of the month to go.”
More snow could be on the way next week, he said.
