Portland police arrested a 20-year-old South Portland man early this morning on charges of criminal mischief after he was found on Gilman Street painting his “tag” on a building.

Karl Parrott was arrested at 2 a.m. after a neighborhood resident spotted him defacing the property, police said.

He was found with spray paint and latex gloves, police said. Police will be investigating to determine how many of the man’s signature drawings have appeared in the city to determine whether charges should be elevated based on the dollar value of the damage done.

Graffiti has been an ongoing problem in Portland and South Portland. South Portland officials last week unanimously passed an ordinance prohibiting people from having graffiti materials like broad-tipped markers or spray cans, even if they are not caught actually using them.
