UNITY — The Maine Warden Service on Tuesday identified the victim of an apparent accidental drowning on Monday as Darrel “Monk” Butler of Unity.
The 51-year-old Butler was in a canoe with a companion, Matthew Williams, 42, also of Unity, when the craft apparently overturned.
The men were reportedly collecting fiddleheads.
The boat capsized on Sandy Stream, which runs through a marshy area near the site of the Common Ground Fair and Unity College.
Butler’s body was recovered near a bridge at the entrance to the college along Routes 9 and 202.
An autopsy will be performed by the state medical examiner to determine the cause of death, according to Warden Sgt. Patrick Devlin.
