Gov. John Baldacci announced his acceptance today of a painting from Robert Indiana on behalf of the state of Maine. The painting, titled “First State,” is hanging outside the governor's office.
The painting is oil-on-canvas, with dimensions of approximately 6 feet x 6 feet. It's hung on its side, with a circle in the middle and words "First State to Hail the Sun Maine" bordering a red "1" in the middle. Green and white bands radiate out from behind the number like rays of the sun.
“First State” will be on display to the public either in, or adjacent to, the governor’s chambers in the State House, according to terms of the donation agreement. The artwork will be owned by the State of Maine in the custody of the Maine Arts Commission.
Indiana of Vinalhaven is known as a pop artist, whose work usually contains words or numbers. He is probably best known for his piece titled LOVE, which features the letters in block form, L-O on top and V-E on bottom. In the work, the “O” is titled at a 45 degree angle.
