Elderly woman killed while crossing street

By Elbert Aull Portland Press Herald Staff Writer June 12, 2007 12:19 AM

SOUTH PORTLAND – An elderly female pedestrian died Monday night after being struck by a vehicle on Cottage Road, police said.
Lt. Christopher Cook said police were still trying to identify the woman early today.

He described her as likely being in her 70s. Investigators believe she lived in the Meetinghouse Hill area, where the accident occurred, because neighbors reported seeing her walking on a number of occasions, Cook said.

Cook said the woman was in the middle of the heavily traveled street when she was hit by a Jeep at about 9 p.m. No charges were filed, though the driver will undergo a blood alcohol test, which is standard in fatal accidents. The name of the driver was not released.
