KENNEBUNK — William Wegman, an internationally acclaimed artist known for photographing his Weimaraner dogs in various poses and costumes, will be at a Maine Turnpike service plaza Thursday for an unveiling of a new mural.
The mural, entitled "The Flock," which features Wegman’s soulful-looking dogs, will be unveiled at 2 p.m. at the newly-rebuilt southbound service plaza in Kennebunk. The mural is one of three by Wegman commissioned by the Maine Turnpike Authority and the Maine Arts Commission under Maine’s Percent For Art program.
The authority is paying Wegman, a New York artist who summers in Maine, $102,000 for the three pieces. The second mural will be installed at the northbound Kennebunk service plaza Thursday. The third mural can be seen at a new service plaza in West Gardiner when it opens next year.
The murals are made of multiple panels and are large – about five feet tall and 30 feet wide. They will be placed in a central location in the service plazas, about 20 feet off the ground. Turnpike officials say that “they promise to be the topic of conversation among the countless visitors... for years to come.”
