SKOWHEGAN — Selectmen, the Budget Committee and department heads are assembling to rework the $8 million proposed budget that voters defeated at town meeting Monday night.
The group met Wednesday and will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Municipal Building Council Room in an attempt to reduce the budget to $7 million for the June 25 town meeting.
The Monday night meeting was recessed after voters defeated a $900,000 motion to override a legislative tax limit.
The tax limit was established by the legislature as a means of keeping taxes down. Voters have to agree to exceed the amount, which is established by a formula based on population and growth.
Selectmen originally were asking voters to approve a $1.043 million override. That number was pared down by individual articles during the five-hour town meeting.
The meeting was punctuated with comments from taxpayers who said they could not afford continued increases. Resident Kenneth Myers said he was a senior citizen living on a fixed income “and my pocket is empty.”
