Plum Creek opponents say development plan still too big

By John Richardson Portland Press Herald Staff Reporter June 18, 2007 11:52 AM

Two statwide environmental groups spoke out Monday against Plum Creek’s Timber Co.’s latest development plans for the Moosehead Lake region.

The Natural Resources Council of Maine and Maine Audubon said during a Portland press conference that they will file to formally intervene and oppose the plan unveiled in April because it includes too much development in natural areas and sensitive wildlife habitats.

The environmental groups said they are particularly concerned about the level of development planned for the eastern shore of the lake near Lily Bay, where Plum Creek plans a resort and subdivision. And, they said, an expanded resort plan for the western side of the lake on Big Moose Mountain would overwhelm that area.

The plan includes 975 house lots in numerous subdivisions, and as many as 1,050 more units –anything from houses to hotel rooms – in the two resorts. Plans for the resorts also would include shops, restaurants and club houses and include a building height limit of six floors, according to the groups.

The company has said it modified its plan to address some of the opponents’ concerns. It reduced the number of shorefront lots around ponds and lakes in the region by 40 percent, for example, and increased the number of acres to be donated for conservation from 70,000 acres to 90,000 acres.
