Jail chief OK after accidental shooting

By Central Maine Newspapers June 18, 2007 02:50 PM

SKOWHEGAN — Capt. Stephen Giggey, administrator at the Somerset County Jail, accidentally shot himself in the arm, in his office on June 11, Sheriff Barry DeLong said Monday.

DeLong said Giggey was not seriously hurt when his pistol accidentally discharged, while he was cleaning the gun in his office. He required two or three stitches to his left arm at Redington-Fairview General Hospital, DeLong said.

Giggey’s office has no access door to the jail, DeLong said. The sheriff added that the accident posed no danger to those inside the jail, and that it is routine for officers to clean their weapons in their offices.

“I’d rather have they do that in their office than in the parking lot,” DeLong said.

Giggey was back on the job hours after the accident, DeLong said.
