CONWAY, N.H. — A Maine man charged with murdering three people at a military surplus store is asking to be transferred from the Carroll County House of Corrections.
Michael L. Woodbury, 31, of Windham did not enter a plea during a hearing this morning at Northern Carroll County District Court. He was ordered held without bail, and the judge scheduled a probable cause hearing for July 18.
During his brief court appearance, Woodbury submitted a letter to the court in which he asked for a transfer from the jail. And, for the second time in two days, he admitted his guilt to the slayings at the Army Barracks store on Route 16.
"I am requesting to be transfered," the note read. "I feel like some of the staff here is taking it personally that I murdered" three people.
Most of the two-page note is a diary of what Woodbury says has happened to him in the less than 24 hours since he was admitted to the jail. He alleges that he was greeted at the jail Thursday at 3 p.m. with a TASER pointed at his face, and that he's been placed in areas with fresh human urine and feces.
In a parenthetical comment, Woodbury wrote, "I have realized that most of the officers here are not bad people, they are just scared of me. I understand, but they do not have anything to fear from me, at all." The words "do not" were underlined for emphasis.
After reading the note, Judge Pamela Albee told Woodbury that she would pass along his concerns.
"Just as long as there's a record of that," Woodbury interjected, "I don't really care what is done with that."
He then expressed the view that corrections officers at the Carroll County House of Corrections are too close to the scene of the shootings.
"It's just my opinion," he said, "it's just a little too close to the action."
"The corrections officers are professionals," the judge responded.
On Thursday, Woodbury said, "Unfortunately I did" when asked by reporters outside a Maine courtroom whether he had killed the men.
The victims in Monday's shootings were the store manager, James Walker, 34, of Denmark, Maine; William Jones, 25, of Walpole, Mass; and Gary Jones, 23, of Plymouth, Mass. The Massachusetts men were not related.
