By David Hench Portland Press Herald Staff Writer July 10, 2007 11:42 AM

PORTLAND — Two teenagers face charges of breaking into cars in their Park Avenue neighborhood after they were caught by police this morning with a backpack full of stolen items.

Police are still trying to find the rightful owners of the items, ranging from binoculars to digital music players to cosmetics, and today are fielding dozens of reports of car burglaries in that neighborhood.

Police were called to Forest Avenue and Park Avenue at 3 a.m. after a man reported catching two youths inside his pickup cab. He chased them off but was able to provide police a description.

An officer later spotted three teenagers who matched the description and when he approached, one ran. The others continued walking until the officer stopped them, then they too fled, police said.

Officers chased them to a fenced in parking lot at Forest Street and Park Avenue and found them hiding behind a car. Police did find two victims, one whose business cards and backpack were found with the boys and another whose laptop computer was recovered.

Police charged a 14-year-old Park Street resident with burglary to a motor vehicle, possession of burglary tools and failure to submit to arrest and a 16-year-old with two counts of receiving stolen property, two counts of burglary to a motor vehicle, possession of burglary tools and refusing to submit to arrest. Police have not yet found the third suspect.

The two were released to their guardians pending a court appearance.
