MONCTON, New Brunswick — A hearing is underway in Moncton to determine whether a man charged with a grisly double murder is fit to stand trial.
Gregory Allen Despres, 24, is accused of killing his elderly next-door neighbors, 74-year-old Frederick Fulton and 70-year-old Verna Decarie, in their Minto, New Brunswick, home in 2005. Both were repeatedly stabbed and Fulton was decapitated.
New Brunswick's mental health review board will assess Despres's mental state.
A judge ruled in late April that Despres, who went on a 10-minute disjointed rant while in the courtroom, was not fit to stand trial.
The review will be conducted by a panel consisting of three lawyers and two Fredericton-area psychiatrists. It is scheduled to run for three days and a decision will be made by the end of the week.
Depres was arrested in Massachusetts shortly after the bodies were found.
He entered the U.S. at Calais, Maine, and was permitted entry despite his bizarre behavior and the odd items he was carrying, including a chain saw, a homemade sword and an axe.
