Maine game wardens and local officials continue to search for boaters who might have been involved in a serious collision Saturday night on Long Lake in Harrison and county prosecutors have joined the investigation.
Authorities were notified of the collision at 9 p.m. and discovered a cigarette style speedboat had launched 100 yards onto shore near Bear Point on Long Lake’s eastern shore. Two people who had been on the boat were discovered swimming to shore a short while later, said Mark Latti, spokesman for the Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Department.
Two hours later, a warden found wreckage of a second boat, a 14-foot fiberglass boat drifting on the lake with nobody on board.
“Right now there’s a search underway to locate any operator or passengers that may have been in the second boat,” Latti said this morning.
Divers were participating in the search and a plane was used to search on Sunday. Members of the Harrison Fire Department and Bridgton Search and Rescue were assisting, he said.
The wardens service was not releasing the names of those involved because of the ongoing investigation, which is being done in conjunction with members of the Cumberland County District Attorney’s office.
