BELGRADE LAKES AREA — Firefighters and power company employees are working in the dark and fog to clear roadways that were blocked by dozens of trees that fell in a hailstorm earlier this afternoon.
Motorists should use extreme caution if they must venture out, according to Rome Fire Chief Gary Foss.
“Be very cautious because it’s very foggy and hard to see,” he said. “And it’s dark, and (fallen) trees are protruding.
Fallen trees and downed power lines currently block Mercer Road, Watson Road, Mountain Drive and Wildwood Estates. Mercer Road alone is blocked by 15-20 trees.
Most of the town of Rome has lost power.
A layer of hail that lay as deep as four inches in places prevented first responders from taking to the roads at first, Foss said.
No one has been reported injured.
