The Portland School Committee is set to discuss the so-called Dench Report during a workshop meeting Wednesday, school officials said today.
The committee hired Bryan Dench, a lawyer with Skelton Taintor & Abbott in Auburn, one month ago to investigate how Maine’s largest school district developed recent budget problems and who was responsible.
The workshop will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 321 at Portland Arts and Technology High School, off Allen Avenue.
In recent weeks, Superintendent Mary Jo O’Connor and School Finance Director Richard Paulson resigned amid controversy over how the financial troubles happened. O’Connor’s departure is set for Dec. 28 unless the committee replaces her sooner.
The committee also will consider whether to appeal a judge’s recent ruling that parts of a July 25 executive session were illegal when talk strayed to public budget matters.
The committee has until Thursday to challenge the judge’s decision, which required the panel to release budget-related notes taken during the meeting, as well as a written statement O’Connor distributed at the meeting.
The committee also will discuss future plans to address various challenges ahead. They include covering a $1.7 million deficit in the budget that ended June 30 and preparing a budget for next year that will win voters’ support in the spring.
