Leaders agree to mountain climbing challenge

By The Associated Press wire report September 04, 2007 05:08 PM

FREDERICTON, New Brunswick - The premier of New Brunswick and the governor of Maine have issued each other a challenge that promises to see them reach a new peak in their political careers.

Premier Shawn Graham and Gov. John Baldacci have agreed to climb the highest mountain peaks in Maine and New Brunswick, together, next summer.

Both men are active promoters of fitness, and earlier this summer Baldacci became the first Maine governor to climb Mount Katahdin in more than 40 years.

The peak at Katahdin is 5,267 feet and and marks the northern end of the Appalachian Trail.

Mount Carleton in northwestern New Brunswick has an elevation of 2,690 feet.

The two leaders say they want to promote the international Appalachian Trail.

The most spectacular route on Katahdin involves taking the mile-long Knife Edge, which includes major drops on either side of the trail.
