Maine members of the 399th Combat Support Hospital (CSH) will return to the Portland International Jetport at 8 a.m. Monday.
The 399th CSH is a Massachusetts-based reserve unit with more than 400 soldiers. The doctors, nurses, medics and support personnel departed last fall for a year deployment in Iraq.
While in Iraq, the unit conducted hospital operations in both Al Asad and Tikrit. The 399th established the first Army combat support hospital in the Anbar province at Al Asad. The Anbar province is one of the most dangerous areas in Iraq with more than 40 percent of American casualties in Iraq.
A welcome ceremony for the 42 Maine soldiers at the Jetport's northeast hangar will be open to the public. The hangar will open at 7:00 with light refreshments and musical entertainment while family and friends wait for the unit's arrival.
