College help programs get money

By Morning Sentinel Staff Report October 03, 2007 10:14 AM

AUGUSTA — Twenty-two programs, including several in central Maine, that help adults make the transition to college will get grants from the state Department of Education’s Maine College Transition Program.

The grants range from $15,000 to $30,000 and total $600,000.
The 22 sites include ones located in Lewiston, Farmington, Gardiner, Wiscasset, Newport, Dover-Foxcroft, Fairfield, Belfast.

The Maine College Transition Program’s goal is to help Maine adults earn a degree by providing classes in subjects such as study skills, college writing, algebra, biology and chemistry; helping with completion of applications and financial aid forms; and providing college counseling and career planning.

Education Commissioner Susan A. Gendron congratulated the grant recipients at the statewide Adult Education Director’s meeting Tuesday in Augusta.
