CHINA — An early afternoon fire Monday resulted in what appeared to be significant water and smoke damage to an Alder Park Road home.

South China Fire Chief Richard Morse said heavy smoke was coming from the second floor of the two-story wood house when he arrived, shortly after 1 p.m.

The home belongs to Dean and Lorraine Rhoades, who were away doing errands when the fire broke out.

Lorraine Rhoades said she and her husband had lived in the house for 22 years.

Morse said a passerby alerted the fire department to the fire.
