Racino battle opponents allege deception

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report October 19, 2007 10:08 AM

Supporters and opponents of a plan to install slot machines at a yet-to-be-built harness-racing track in Washington County are accusing each other of running deceptive television ads.

Yes on Question 1, which supports the proposed Calais racino, and Casinos No!, which opposes the Passamaquoddy Tribe's plan, have asked Maine television stations to yank the other side's ad because of alleged inaccuracies.

Each side in the referendum battle, which will be decided Nov. 6, began advertising on television this week in what has been a low-key, relatively inexpensive campaign.

The only racino allowed under current state law is Penn National Gaming's Hollywood Slots parlor in Bangor, which is housed in temporary quarters while a permanent facility is under construction.

Maine voters authorized limited racino gambling when they approved a ballot question in 2003. The latest plan is on the ballot because Gov. John Baldacci vetoed a bill this year authorizing a Washington County racino and the Legislature upheld the veto, sending the citizen-initiated bill out to the voters.
