Ex-Monmouth teacher arrested in student sex case

By Kennebec Journal Staff report October 23, 2007 01:09 PM

AUGUSTA — A former Monmouth Academy teacher out on bail after being charged with having sex with a student was arrested early today and charged with meeting the 16-year-old girl in violation of a court order.

Christopher I. Dumaine, 39, of Readfield, was taken into custody by Maine State Police detectives who had him under surveillance.

Court documents filed by the Kennebec County Deputy District Attorney Alan Kelley say police saw Dumaine and the girl together on the private road leading to her house.

“Detective Adam Kelley recognized the victim as she exited the defendant’s vehicle, and told her to go to her residence as he took the defendant into custody,” according to the state’s motion to revoke Dumaine’s bail. The girl told officers “she did not want to say anything that would get the defendant in trouble,” the same document says.

Dumaine was charged Oct. 11 with two counts of gross sexual assault and two counts of unlawful sexual contact beween June 1 and Sept. 14 and all the charges name the same girl as the victim. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and was freed on bail Oct. 11.

Dumaine taught at Monmouth Academy, his alma mater, for 16 years before resigning abruptly Sept. 17.
