Bully prevention conference planned

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report October 24, 2007 12:13 PM

A conference aimed at preventing bullying and fighting among young people is scheduled for Nov. 5 in Portland.

The conference is titled “Beyond Bully Prevention: Strategies that Work” and will be held at the Eastland Park Hotel. The conference includes eight workshops focusing on a variety of topics, including: racism and violence; how to help girls build coalitions and break patterns of “girl fighting”; young people using the Internet to harass each other; sexual harassment in schools; and how media and marketing influence the way boys and girls see themselves.

Workshop presenters include: Lyn Mikel Brown, a Colby College education professor who co-wrote the book “Packaging Girlhood” and helped found the central Maine group Hardy Girls Healthy Women; Nan Stein, senior research scientist at the Center for Research on Women at Wellesley College in Massachusetts; Adam Howard, professor of education at Hanover College in Indiana; and Mark Tappan, a Colby College professor and a founder of the Maine Boys’ Network.

The conference is organized by Hardy Girls Healthy Women, a Waterville-based group that runs programs dedicated to the health and well-being of women and girls.

The conference, which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., is designed for teachers, school counselors, social workers and all adults who work with youth. The cost is $95 per person ($120 after Oct. 26) with a $10 discount per person for groups of three or more. To register and to find more information, go to www.hghw.org or call 861-8131.
