SOUTH PORTLAND — An expansion plan for the Maine Mall won approval Tuesday from the Planning Board.
The board voted 7-0 in favor of the project, said Tex Haeuser, the city’s director of planning and development.
The project includes a 14-screen cinema and a restaurant in the area formerly used by Filene’s, two free-standing restaurants, an expansion of JCPenney and stormwater treatment improvements.
A lawsuit over a South Portland Board of Appeals decision related to parking at the mall is pending. The suit was filed by Joseph Soley, an area landlord and real estate developer who owns the nearby Shops at Clark’s Pond and Cornerbrook.
Haeuser said General Growth Properties of Chicago, the owner of the Maine Mall, will not be able to begin a later phase of the expansion project until the lawsuit is resolved.
