THE NEWS FROM....
•SOUTH PARIS — The Associated Press is reporting this morning that Christian Nielsen plans to appeal pretrial rulings that preceded his decision to plead guilty to killing four people in western Maine.
Defense lawyers expect to file their appeal in Oxford County Superior Court today, one week after Nielsen entered his guilty pleas. Nielsen, 32, pleaded guilty to four counts of murder in the deaths of three women and a man over a four-day period last year.
But it was a conditional plea. He can take it back if his lawyers win their appeal of a judge's denial of a motion to suppress statements Nielsen made to police and his father. He also may appeal a ruling that he was fit to stand trial.
•SACO: TRAVEL ADVISORY — The road known locally as "York Hill", also known as the Biddeford end of Main Street, will be closed all day, until 7:30 p.m. for road repair. That means if you are trying to get from Saco to Biddeford, do not use the bridge by Factory Island. Take Elm Street (Route 1) instead, or come up with some alternative route. In other words, it will be slow going if you need to travel through Biddeford and Saco today. So plan accordingly.
The road will be open; however, for those doing business at 110 Main St. or at the Amtrak station on the top of York Hill.
•PORTLAND — A large group of religious leaders will meet in Portland today at the State Street Church, United Church of Christ for a day-long interfaith conference on domestic violence.
The conference will be led by the Rev. Dr. Marie Fortune, founder of the Faith Trust Institute in California. More than 150 people, most of them church leaders from Maine and New England, will learn how to better deal with domestic violence within their clergy.
Just an aside: It might be difficult finding a parking spot along State Street due to the large number of people attending the conference.
•WINTHROP — Firefighters put out a blaze at 10 Ellis Lane last night around 10 p.m. last night. The fire was heavy, but crews were able to get it under control. It's not clear at this time how it started.
