Portland boy gets his own Fenway Park

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report October 25, 2007 05:02 PM

Eight-year-old Ben Hanna arrived home from school this afternoon to find a small-scale likeness of Fenway Park in his backyard.

The Portland boy was diagnosed with a rare blood disease last summer and had wished for the ball field through Maine's Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening diseases.

About 15 employees with the Portland Sea Dogs arrived at Ben's home early this morning to construct the ball field, which contains features including a small-scale likeness of Fenway's Green Monster (Ben's left-field wall is eight feet high) and a former home plate and pitching mound from Hadlock Field.

Since his diagnosis in June, Ben has had three surgeries and underwent chemotherapy treatments once a week over the summer, according to his father, Jim.

In a second surprise this afternoon, Ben's father announced he would be taking Ben to the World Series Red Sox game tonight. The family received tickets from a family friend.
