Bill targets bomb attack prevention

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, joined the head of the Department of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff, at a press conference this morning, announcing a bill to assist law enforcement agencies prevent terrorist bomb attacks.

Portland Police Deputy Chief Joseph Loughlin also spoke at the 10 a.m. press conference on Capitol Hill.

The legislation, written by Collins and Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., will enhance the Homeland Security Department's ability to help local government officials, emergency responders and the private sector "deter, detect, prevent, protect against and respond to terrorist attacks," according to Collins' office.

Chertoff has identified bomb – or improvised explosive device – attacks as a major threat to the United States.

Bangor Police Department Chief Ron Gastia and Col. Patrick Fleming of the Maine State Police also attended the press conference.
