AUGUSTA — Randy McCoy of radio station B98.5 will be spending this week in a tent next to a tank parked at Camp Keyes as the radio station and the Maine Army National Guard team up for the eighth annual “Tanksgiving” Food Drive.
Organizers describe the event as the largest food drive in the state, providing tons of food to the Salvation Army in Augusta and Waterville and monetary donations to about a dozen local food pantries.
B98.5 disc jockeys are scheduled to broadcast live during the week from Waterville and Augusta area Shaw’s Supermarkets and Wal-Marts, as well as George’s Banana Stand in Skowhegan and Goggin’s IGA in Randolph, where nonperishable food items, cash and checks made out to the Salvation Army will be accepted from donors.
Maine Army National Guard soldiers help collect the food.
Organizers anticipate the food drive will secure enough food for the Salvation Army to provide food to needy families at both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
