WATERVILLE — Police and fire officials went to the former nuns convent next to Mount Merici Roman Catholic Elementary School just before 4 a.m. Friday for a report of smoke in a stairwell.

Responders found a toaster smoking in the building, which is now used as off campus housing for Colby College students.

Police said it appeared someone was intoxicated and burned something in the toaster and that another person used a fire extinguisher to put it out, but “no one will 'fess up.”
