The University of Southern Maine anticipates banning several hundred students from its Portland and Gorham campuses effective today for failing to meet the latest vaccination requirements for the mumps, a spokesman said.
The university held a vaccination clinic Wednesday so about 1,300 full-time or residence hall students on the two campuses could get get their vaccinations up to date.
Those students who don't get two doses of vaccine will be barred from the campus, where at least one student has come down with the mumps. The Lewiston campus, about 35 miles from Portland, was not affected by the vaccination rules.
"These numbers are still being crunched, but I think it's going to be several hundred, anyway," spokesman Bob Caswell said this morning.
Once the list is compiled, it'll be provided to professors who'll ask those students to leave. Residence hall entry cards also will be deactivated.
