BRUNSWICK - The Brunswick area has been hit by a small earthquake for the second time in less than three months.
The Weston Observatory reports that there was a magnitude 2.2 earthquake at 5:02 a.m. Tuesday about four miles northwest of Brunswick. Associate Director Dina Smith says the same area was subjected to similar-scale earthquake on Oct. 2.
Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Jay Manhardt noticed the quake at his house in Bath. He described it as a low rumble.
Smith says Maine and New Hampshire are the busiest states in the region when it comes to seismic activity. She says Maine reports one earthquake every month or six weeks. Most, like the one Tuesday, can barely be felt.
