Red Sox trophy on display at Hadlock

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report December 14, 2007 11:47 AM

The 2007 World Series trophy, which the Red Sox won in October, is on public display until 4 p.m. today at Hadlock Field in Portland.

No Red Sox players will be present. The trophy will be displayed in the Portland Room. Fans will be admitted through the main gate and should bring their own cameras.

There is no official plan to display the trophy in any other Maine community. Red Sox President Larry Lucchino brought the trophy to New Haven and Hartford, Conn., on Thursday.

This year's celebration is tame compared to 2004, when the Red Sox won Boston's first World Series championship trophy in 86 years.

The team celebrated throughout New England with rallies in all six states, including a massive tour throughout Massachusetts, where the trophy appeared in 351 towns and cities. In Maine, the trophy was displayed in Portland, Presque Isle, Bangor, Augusta, Lewiston and Bethel.

Portland's 2004 celebration included a parade along Congress Street featuring four players: Kevin Youkilis, Doug Mirabelli, Mark Bellhorn and Lenny DiNardo.

Gov. John Baldacci and Portland Mayor Ed Suslovic will hold a press conference after today's trophy viewing.

Following the press conference, the trophy will be brought to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center, accompanied by Slugger, the Portland Sea Dogs' mascot.
