State: Beware ID theft during holiday

By Kennebec Journal Staff report December 21, 2007 12:57 PM

AUGUSTA — State regulators issued a warning Friday about identity theft, and offered tips to help consumers protect themselves.

The Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation said the holiday season is “a prime time for identity theft.”

Here are some of their tips:

1. Know what’s in your wallet. Don’t carry anything with your Social Security number on it. Carry only needed credit cards in case of loss or theft.

2. Shred all pre-approved credit offers, bank statements and utility bills before throwing them away.

3. Be suspicious of solicitors. Never give out personal information over the phone, in a store or online.
