BOSTON - A plan that would lower mercury levels in fish throughout New England and New York has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The plan calls for a 98 percent reduction from 1998 levels of mercury from atmospheric sources. The reduction would make mercury levels in fish low enough for the states to lift fish-consumption advisories. The Northeast has experienced elevated levels of mercury in certain fish species for several years.
