A Pownal man and his young daughter are homeless after a fire destroyed their Hallowell Road home this morning, according to the Pownal Fire Department. However, no one was injured in the blaze, which occurred about 1 a.m., said Fire Chief Scott Pollock.
The cause of the fire was an unattended candle on an enclosed porch, Pollock said.
He said that the house lost power in the snowstorm and the owner, Dan Catlin, lit some candles on an enclosed porch but left them unattended as he attempted to get a generator working. The fire on the porch quickly spread to the rest of the 1 1/2-story wood-frame house, Pollock said.
Catlin and his daughter got out of the house safely and got into Catlin’s truck, which he drove to a neighbor’s house to call the fire department, Pollock said.
Firefighters were just about a mile down the road attending to an electrical wire that fallen in the storm when they got the call, and were at the house in about five minutes, Pollock said. However, the fire had already spread, he said.
It took about an hour to get it under control, he said. Pownal had assistance from the towns of Durham, Freeport, New Gloucester, North Yarmouth and Cumberland, he said.
Pollock said the Red Cross was being contacted to help the family.
