Gorham students make own 'snow day'

Gorham High School officials can be proud of the industriousness of some of their students, but that will have to wait. For now, they’re busy digging away mountains of snow that were piled in front of the school’s doors, forcing the cancellation of classes today.

Police were called at 6 a.m. today after school workers found piles of snow 4 to 6 feet high in front of each of the school’s 20 entrances. To make matters worse, water had been sprayed into the door locks, freezing them shut during overnight subzero temperatures.

There appears to be no damage, just a lot of cleanup work.

“It looks like they used shovels. It was a large group of kids, just a prank,” said Gorham Sgt. Danny Young.

School officials were going to delay the school start by two hours but because of fire codes that require exits to be completely cleared, they decided to cancel instead.

There were no reports of roving bands of shovel-wielding high school kids, but Young said he expects the school resource officer will get to the bottom of the caper. It’s unclear what action, if any, will be taken against those involved.
