Biddeford WWII vet receives medals

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report January 04, 2008 01:40 PM

An 83-year-old Biddeford man who fought in the Battle of the Bulge received a new set of military medals on Friday, 61 years after losing the originals.

Rene Gobeil was presented a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and several other medals by Sen. Susan Collins. The ceremony took place at Collins' office in Biddeford.

Gobeil, who was drafted into the Army in 1941, said his original medals were lost when his parents sold their home in Biddeford. Gobeil's daughter contacted Collins and arranged for him to receive the replacements.
