Finances, class rankings on school agenda

By Kelley Bouchard Portland Press Herald Staff Writer January 07, 2008 11:13 AM

Portland's high school principals will make a presentation to the School Committee’s finance subcommittee at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Room 321, Portland Arts and Technology High School, 196 Allen Ave.

The presentation will cover staffing, programs, new initiatives, where money is spent now and what unmet needs and challenges exist. The presentation will help lay the groundwork to develop the district’s 2008-09 budget.

Elementary and middle school principals made similar presentations in December. Documents from their presentations are available on the school district’s Web site .

Also on Wednesday, the School Committee will consider having the current weighted class-ranking system apply to the high school classes of 2012 and 2013 as well.

The committee had voted to end the current grading system with the class of 2011 (this year's ninth-graders), but some members would like to take more time to develop an alternative way to recognize top graduates.

The committee will meet at 7 p.m. in Room 250 at PATHS.

The committee also will hear an update on plans to replace Clifford Elementary School and will consider the appointment of Herbert Hopkins to be the district's new business manager. Hopkins currently works for Scarborough schools.
