The first of four candidates for the president's job at University of Southern Maine appeared on the Portland campus this afternoon for a public interview with faculty, staff, students and anyone interested.

Bob Smith, now provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, said he wants to inspire faculty and students because they have the best ideas.

Next up is Selma Botman, executive vice chancellor and university provost of The City University of New York, who will be at the Glickman Library tomorrow at 1 p.m. for another public interview following earlier appearances at Lewiston Auburn College and the Gorham campus.
