Two charged in vandalism spree

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report January 24, 2008 08:43 PM

A South Portland man and a Portland youth face charges of elevated aggravated criminal mischief in connection with a vandalism spree in which BB guns were used to shoot out car windows, police said today.

Adam Wedge, 18, of South Portland was arrested today following questioning at the Portland Police Department, according to Lt. Anthony Ward. He was taken to the Cumberland County Jail and later released on bail, according to Ward.

The youth, whose name was not released because he is not an adult, was arrested Wednesday night after being questioned at the South Portland Police Department, Ward said. He is being held at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.

During the vandalism spree, which happened over multiple days earlier this month, more than 100 vehicles were damaged in Portland and South Portland, according to police. Total damage to the vehicles is estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars. Similiar incidents were also reported in Scarborough and Gorham.

Police are still investigating, saying that other individuals may have been involved.

Last week, police announced a $500 reward for tips about the vandalism spree. There was no word from police on Thursday about whether anyone has collected the reward.
